This program was made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

Families with children ages 7-13 were invited to attend a special Family Day at the Academy. Gathering at the Pickford Center, families spent the morning participating in hands-on activities that taught them about the art of makeup and hairstyling and how they impact storytelling in movies.

Throughout the morning, they interacted with motion picture makeup artists and hairstylists. With the makeup artists, there were opportunities for children to try on their own movie makeup as well as to design their own makeup styles.  With the hairstylists, children observed and learned about hairstyling techniques used by professional movie hairstylists.

After a complimentary boxed lunch, families and the general public were invited into our Linwood Dunn Theater for a discussion about the use of makeup in Wonder, with Academy Governor, Lois Burwell, Makeup Artist Arjen Tuiten and director Stephen Chbosky. Through clips and behind-the-scenes images, the audience had the opportunity to see how makeup impacts the overall emotion of a movie.

With a new appreciation and understanding of the art of Makeup and Hairstyling, we ended the day with a screening of Wonder.
